Author studies are a great way to compare many books by the same author. Books are studied for craft examples: the students notice the craft, talk and think about why the author used it, name the craft, find other books with the same craft, and then use the craft in their writing. The following are some author sites to visit. These are authors that are regularly studied in second grade. www.janbrett.com (Author and illustrator of The Mitten, The Hat, and many other popular children’s books.) www.kevinhenkes.com (Author and illustrator of Chrysanthemum and Lilly’s Purple Plastic Purse.) www.robertmunsch.com (Canadian author of Love You Forever and 50 Below Zero.) www.lauranumeroff.com (Author of the If You Give A...books.) www.eric-carle.com (Author and illustrator of The Very Hungry Caterpillar.) www.pilkey.com (Author of the Dragon series and the Captain Underpants series.) www.tomie.com (Author and illustrator of Strega Nona and more!) www.seussville.com (Games and activities with Dr. Seuss books.)
