Reading and writing are interdependent.  Although each grade level’s reading curriculum reflects what students are expected to know and be able to do in the area of reading, instruction in reading is directly related to instruction in language and writing.  Therefore, instruction that is provided in a reading or language block of time always reinforces the relevance of one to the other.

District Calendar

Reading/Language Syllabus

Reading units include mysteries, short stories, and non-fiction. We will also have the opportunity to read several novels throughout the year.  All students will be responsible for two book reports per quarter.

The language curriculum is based on writing and grammar. The students will be able to plan, draft, revise, and publish clear and effective writing.  The students will also communicate proper grammar with lessons on parts of speech, identifying subjects and predicates in a sentence, and identifying and using complete sentences.

I base all of my grades on percentages.  For each daily assignment, quiz, test, and project you will receive a grade.  All of these grades will be averaged together based on their weight.

About Mrs. Sutton

I expect all students to use their assignment notebook which is issued to them at the beginning of the year.  I will check assignment notebooks on a regular basis to see that lessons for the day and assignments have been written down.

Each student will be allowed two incomplete assignments per quarter.  You have until the last grading day of the quarter to hand in those two incompletes and receive full credit for those two assignments.  After you have had two incompletes in my grade book you will receive a zero for each incomplete assignment thereafter.  This only pertains to daily work.  I expect projects and language papers to be handed in on the given due date.  If projects and language papers are late 5% will be deducted each day from the grade you would have received if it had been on time.
